Australia is one of the most popular places to emigrate to currently. Many people moving out there can’t bear, understandably, to leave their cat behind. That’s where PetAir UK come in; we can help you every step of the way and make the whole process less stressful for you, taking care of things from flights and veterinary care to documentation and cat passports.

Australia are generally quite strict with pets being imported into the country, so the process is slightly more complicated. However, PetAir is run and owned by veterinary surgeons and assisted by a team of healthcare professionals, a lot of which have an expertise in transporting cats to certain places in the world, so you can always find help from someone who knows exactly what they’re talking about. Plus, we export around 400 cats per year to Australia, so you know your cat is in professional hands.

Since 01st March 2023, the rules have changed slightly and now pets need to serve 30 days quarantine rather than 10 days, unless they are pets returning to Australia. Pets need to have their identities verified by a government veterinarian and due to the way government vets are organised in UK, this is not possible at this time, but we hope it will change.

The Steps

Below is a watered down step-by-step guide of the things that need to be prepared and done before the time of export to Australia.

Here’s the rewritten and compliant version of your document for relocating cats to Australia:

1. Confirm General Eligibility

Before starting the process, ensure your cat meets the following eligibility criteria:

  • No quarantine restrictions: Cats must not be under any current quarantine restrictions.
  • Pregnancy status: Cats must not be more than 30 days pregnant or be suckling young at the time of export.

2. Microchipping

Ensure your cat is microchipped with an ISO-compliant microchip. This is required for identification throughout the relocation process and will be referenced in all veterinary procedures and paperwork.

3. Rabies Vaccination

Your cat must have a valid rabies vaccination, which must be administered when the cat is at least 90 days old. This vaccination must be current and recorded by an authorized veterinarian.

4. Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre (RNAT) Test

The RNAT test must be conducted between 180 days and 12 months before export. After your cat has received its rabies vaccination:

  • A UK official veterinarian must scan the microchip and collect a blood sample for the RNAT test.
  • Your cat must have a valid RNAT test at the time of export. The blood sample must be sent to an approved laboratory, and test results must show sufficient rabies antibody levels.

5. Rabies Vaccination and RNAT Test Declaration by an Official Government Vet

Before applying for the import permit, an Official Government Vet (an approved UK government veterinarian) must complete the rabies vaccination and RNAT test declaration:

  • The blood sample for the RNAT test must be taken by an official UK veterinarian.
  • The vet who signs the RNATT declaration must be from a different practice than the vet who took the blood sample. If this is difficult to arrange, PetAir UK can assist with coordinating the different practices.
  • PetAir UK can manage this process if you choose to work with us on your cat’s relocation.

6. Apply for an Import Permit

After receiving the RNATT declaration, apply for the import permit through the [Australian Department of Agriculture website](http://www.agriculture.gov.au). This should be done at least 42 days before export to allow time for processing.

7. Book a Quarantine Space

After obtaining the import permit, you must book quarantine space for your cat at the Mickleham Quarantine Facility near Melbourne. All cats must complete at least 30 days in quarantine unless they meet specific criteria (such as identity verification by a government vet).

For more information, visit the [Australian Department of Agriculture website](http://www.agriculture.gov.au).

8. Ensure General Vaccinations

Your cat should be vaccinated against:

  • Feline enteritis
  • Rhinotracheitis
  • Calicivirus

These vaccinations should be valid for the entire post-arrival quarantine period.

9. Internal Parasite Treatments

Your cat must undergo two internal parasite treatments within 45 days before export:

  • The treatments must be at least 14 days apart.
  • The second treatment must be administered within 5 days before export. The treatment should cover roundworms and tapeworms.

10. External Parasite Treatments

Your cat must be treated for external parasites (such as fleas and ticks) starting at least 21 days before export:

  • This treatment should be repeated according to the manufacturer’s instructions until export.
  • A veterinarian must apply a product that kills fleas and ticks on contact.

11. Pre-Export Veterinary Examination

Within 5 days before export, your cat must undergo a pre-export veterinary examination to ensure they are:

  • Free from external parasites (e.g., ticks).
  • Free from any signs of infectious or contagious diseases.

12. Completion of Veterinary Health Certificate by an Official Government Vet

The Veterinary Health Certificate must be completed by an Official Government Vet from a different practice than the one that administered the earlier treatments and took the blood samples. If arranging this is difficult, PetAir UK can assist with the process and make sure all export documents are signed off correctly.

After Your Cat Arrives in Australia

Upon landing in Australia, your cat will be transported to the Mickleham Quarantine Facility near Melbourne. All cats must complete a minimum of 30 days in quarantine, unless their identity has been verified by a government vet or they have previously traveled from Australia.

After the quarantine period, your cat can be flown to its final destination in Australia. PetAir UK can assist with arranging this onward transportation or you can manage the logistics yourself.
