Taking Pets to Canberra Australia
Relocating to Canberra, Australia, with your pet is an exciting journey that offers a unique blend of city life and natural beauty. Canberra, the nation’s capital, is known for its expansive parks, pet-friendly environments, and a welcoming community that makes it an ideal destination for pet owners. However, bringing your pet from the UK to Canberra requires careful planning and adherence to Australia’s stringent biosecurity regulations.
Australia’s strict import laws are designed to protect its unique ecosystem, and Canberra, as the administrative heart of the country, upholds these regulations rigorously. From mandatory vaccinations and quarantine requirements to navigating the final leg of your pet’s journey to Canberra, the process can be complex. Working with a professional pet relocation service can help streamline this process, ensuring that all the necessary steps are handled efficiently.
Whether you’re moving to Canberra’s bustling city center or its tranquil suburbs, this guide will walk you through the essential steps to safely and comfortably relocate your pet to Canberra. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth transition, allowing your pet to settle into their new home and enjoy all that Canberra has to offer.
Step 1: Start Your Research and Planning Early
Planning your pet’s relocation to Canberra from the UK requires early and thorough preparation. Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world to protect its unique ecosystem, and Canberra, as the nation’s capital, strictly adheres to these regulations.
- Consult your vet: It is recommended that you speak with your veterinarian at least nine months before your intended move. This allows ample time to meet all the requirements and avoid any last-minute complications.
- Plan ahead: Early planning ensures that all veterinary, regulatory, and logistical steps are completed on time.
Step 2: Understand the Quarantine Requirements
All pets entering Australia, including those destined for Canberra, must undergo a mandatory quarantine period upon arrival. Pets are housed at the Mickleham Quarantine Facility near Melbourne, as Canberra does not have its own quarantine facility.
- The quarantine period typically lasts between 10 and 30 days, depending on compliance with all regulations.
- If your pet meets all biosecurity standards, the stay can often be reduced to 10 days. Using a professional pet relocation service, such as PetAir UK, can help ensure all documentation is correct, minimizing your pet’s quarantine stay.
Step 3: Identification Check for 10-Day Quarantine Eligibility
To qualify for the shorter 10-day quarantine period, pets must undergo a new identity verification process before their Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT).
- The identity check must occur before blood sampling for the RNATT. Any RNATT done before this verification will become invalid, requiring the 180-day waiting period for export to restart once the new blood sample arrives at the testing lab.
- From 4 November 2024, the UK will implement the new ID check process, and the earliest pets will be eligible for export under this pathway will be 3 May 2025.
- The identity check is complex, requiring two separate OV66-authorized veterinarians. PetAir UK can help you navigate this process to ensure compliance and eligibility for the 10-day quarantine.
Step 4: Import Permit Application
The Import Permit is a crucial document for bringing your pet into Australia and must be obtained after the Rabies blood test (RNATT). It is one of the most important pieces of the relocation process.
- The application process can take several months, so as soon as your pet’s Rabies test results are confirmed, contact us at PetAir UK to start the application. This will ensure that your pet can travel by your intended date.
Step 5: Booking Quarantine Accommodation
Since there is only one centralised quarantine facility in Australia, located near Melbourne, spaces can fill up quickly. It’s essential to book quarantine accommodation as soon as the Import Permit is issued.
- Early booking ensures that your pet has a secured place in quarantine, which can help avoid delays in their travel to Australia.
Step 6: Veterinary Treatments & Additional Blood Tests
To meet Australia’s strict entry requirements, your pet will need to undergo specific veterinary tests and treatments in the months leading up to their travel.
- PetAir UK will provide your chosen veterinary practice with detailed, step-by-step instructions for all necessary tests and treatments. This includes any additional blood tests and required treatments to ensure your pet meets Australian biosecurity standards.
- We can also include your vet’s costs in our service package, so you won’t have to worry about extra fees during vet appointments.
Step 7: Arrival in Australia
Upon arrival at Melbourne Airport, your pet will be met by staff from the Mickleham Quarantine Facility.
- After completing all necessary biosecurity clearance procedures, your pet will be transported directly to the quarantine facility. While in quarantine, your pet’s health and well-being will be closely monitored.
- The quarantine staff will ensure that your pet complies with all Australian biosecurity regulations, and you will be kept informed of your pet’s condition throughout their stay.
- Any health issues that arise will be promptly addressed by the quarantine staff, and you will be notified.
Step 8: Arranging Transportation from Quarantine to Canberra
Once your pet has completed the quarantine period, they will need to be transported to Canberra. PetAir UK works with a trusted agent in Australia to organize the onward transportation.
- Pets are usually collected early in the morning on their release day from quarantine and placed on the soonest available flight to Canberra. This ensures your pet arrives as quickly as possible, allowing you to reunite with them and start your new life in Canberra.
Step 9: Enjoy Life with Your Pet in Canberra!
Once your pet has safely arrived in Canberra, you can start enjoying your new life together. Canberra is a pet-friendly city with plenty of parks, outdoor spaces, and activities to explore with your beloved pet.
By following these steps and working with PetAir UK, you can ensure a smooth, compliant, and stress-free relocation process for your pet. Although the process may seem complex, early planning and professional assistance will ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible, allowing you and your pet to settle into your new home in Canberra.

Sansa to Australia – August 2019
Everything went very well with Sansa’s relocation to Australia… in fact, so much better than I expected. She is quite a sensitive little thing, but she has settled into her new Aussie home really quickly. Thanks so much for looking after her and making the whole procedure far less stressful than it could have been. Thanks again!

Elvis, Oscar, Princess and Zion to Australia
“Hi Everyone
This is just to send you all a BIG thank you for your help, service, patience and understanding with the move of our four cats to Australia. The service you provided was excellent. Moving country can be so stressful but Catherine especially I knew I could contact you with any concerns or worries with the cats’ move and you would reply straight away with reassurance! From the time I received a quote to even the driver Kevin collecting the cats, I felt that your service was first rate.
Lenny, thank you for sending your updates once the cats arrived in Melbourne. The video was such a lovely touch and was so reassuring.
The cats have settled in well. Princess is still a little nervous (she is a nervous cat anyway) but the others seem fine and are all adjusting well!
Some pics are attached 🙂
Thank you again.
Take care

Bramble flew to Australia – September 2020
Well, that’s him arrived!
We picked him up this morning – only wrinkle was that the crate still did not fit the car but we can sort that out.
I will get the final bill from the Quarantine folk paid and it only remains for me to say a huge thank you to you and all of your colleagues along the way for getting Bramble here in challenging times and for steering me in the correct direction and mopping my anxious doggy-parent brow on more than one occasion!
Bramble is trying to follow everyone around as he gets used to his new surrounding and his Australian “pack” but I am sure as the days go by he will get settled!
Thanks for everything

Nigel the cat flew to Tasmania
Hi Lenny and Catherine
Nigel is home, safe and sound. He’s explored every room of his new home, steadfastly ignored all his new toys, eaten far more treats than strictly necessary, and is now cuddled up by my feet on the sofa looking very contented and happy.
A huge thank you to both of you and everyone else involved in getting him safely here. You’ve obviously looked after him very well, and it’s wonderful to have him back. We missed him so much!
We really appreciate everything you’ve done. If we ever hear of someone wanting to bring their pet over from the UK, we will keep recommending you relentlessly until they give in!
Thanks again,
Lxxxx and family.

Finally, Athena made it over to Brisbane, Australia!
Hi Catherine,
Just to let you know I collected Athena from BNE yesterday for a very happy reunion.
I’m not sure which of us was more excited! Actually, my Dad wins – hands down ! He’s already calling Athena “my dog” and after only 3 hours together the pair of them are inseparable.
Thank you for all your help. I can’t imagine even trying to organise all this by myself. Fantastic service!
Warm Regards,
Drew, Roz and Athena
Oh….And Jim!

Pippi the dog flew to Australia
Hi Rachel, Just wanted to let you know that we collected Pippi from quarantine this morning and she’s settling into her new home down under quite nicely.
She’s lost quite a lot of weight in quarantine, but generally she’s in great shape.
Thank you and everybody at Pet Air for everything – this was a long project for me: my initial enquiry with you was at the end of 2014, and at times I didn’t think it was ever going to happen…but here she is! You and your team made the whole thing very straight forward for me, and I’m very, very grateful.
Kind regards, Sxxxx

Laika and Skip flew to Melbourne, Australia
I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your help in getting my babies safely to Melbourne. I was very happy with the service and never felt a bother when I asked a thousand questions about the process. I really appreciate all the reassurance and understanding you provided, as this helped keep my anxieties at bay. I was so impressed by how easily you were able to sort and rearrange our travel arrangements when I became ill after having my baby. It couldn’t have been easier or more stress free on my part. I picked up Laika and Skip from quarantine expecting them to be skinny and shaking with stress, but they were the happy healthy pups I left in the UK. They have settled into life here so easily and I am so glad we were able to bring them along. Thank you Catherine and thank you to everyone at PetAir UK, I would definitely recommend you to anyone!!
