Dogs are commonly exported to the United Arab Emirates as there is a growing amount of British people emigrating there (especially to Dubai and Abu Dubai), who can’t bear to leave their treasured best friend behind, and why should they? With our fantastic service and years of experience at PetAir UK, we can assure you that we’ll do everything in our power to make the process of exporting your dog to the UAE as smooth as possible.
Flying your dog to the UAE can be a slightly more difficult process than say, flying them to the US. However, we really strive to take the pressure off of you as much as possible, and rest assured, we’ve got plenty of experience in safely exporting dogs to Dubai and Abu Dhabi with around 300 pets per year. Dogs are often flown to either Dubai or Abu Dhabi and then transported by road to their final destination as there are more direct flights to these locations.
Below is a straightforward guide on what needs to be sorted in order for your dog to get an import permit and travel to the UAE.
- Microchip Certificate – Your dog must be microchipped when they are at least 3 months old.
- Vaccinations – A vaccination card is required for your dog, clearly displaying your cat’s up-to-date vaccinations for rabies, and the DHLPP combined canine vaccine for other infectious diseases. The rabies vaccination must be done at least 21 days before PetAir UK can apply for the import permit (and no more than one year prior to travel). The vaccination card will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Water, the permit will then be issued, which normally takes around 7-10 days.
- DEFRA Export Certificate – This is a health certificate for your dog that needs to be completed by a government vet the day before they fly. It involves a veterinary check to ensure that your dog is fit to travel and does not have any diseases before flying to the UAE. They need to be treated against ticks and tapeworm at this appointment too. These documents will be checked by the government vets when your dog lands in the Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
When your dog lands in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi, they will need to be checked by a vet and the paperwork will be inspected. While this is happening, your dog will be put into an animal handling facility – it shouldn’t take too long, a couple of hours at the most. You’ll need to pay for the local handling, veterinary checks and customs when collecting your companion. Owners often use agents to go through the clearing process instead of themselves as it can be quite frustrating; they will then bring your dog to their new home once it is over. This can easily be arranged.

Please note that the following dog breeds have been banned from entering the UAE now:
- American Pit Bull Terriers
- Staffordshire Bull Terriers
- American Staffordshire Terriers
- American Bully
- Pit Bull type dogs
- Brazilian Mastiff (Fila Brasiliero)
- Argentinian Mastiff (Dogo Argentino)
- Any Mastiff or hybrid
- Japanese Tosa
- Rottweiler breeds
- Dobermans
- Canario Presa
- Boxers
- Any mixed breed of the above dogs
For the UK, this mainly concerns Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Boxers, Dobermans, Rottweilers and any cross of these. So, for example, if you declare that you have a Labrador cross; we need to know what it is crossed with.

We couldn’t wish for a better agency to fly our dogs to Dubai. From the minute we had an email with Corrine to continuing the paperwork with Sharon, the service has been seamless. We had all of the information we needed, no stress no fuss and it took away all of the painful paperwork (which is a minefield) of our hands. They explain the full process (the flight and what it’s like for the pets) and calmed me down when I was too worried. Just incredible all around. They work very closely with Emirates and updated the airline about our deaf timid girl which then continued to the actual flight where the air hostess came to tell us that the dogs have been safely borded on the plane and gave us the temperature of their hold space (21C ha!)
