Get a QuoteThe process of taking your dog or cat to Switzerland is very similar to that of the European Union, with some additions as below.
As of January 1st 2021 there have been some changes to the requirement for European pet travel, read more about these here.
Step 1: Make sure your pet is microchipped with an ISO compliant microchip.
Step 2: Your pet will need a rabies vaccination after the microchip is implanted. This will need to be given more than 21 days before entry to Switzerland but not after the vaccination has expired so make sure you know when this is! When your pet has entered either of these countries for the first time, it will not need a 21-day waiting period for future visits – you just need to keep rabies boosters up-to-date and make sure other entry requirements are met.
Step 3: If you are taking your pet to Switzerland by plane, then they will need to be checked within 10 days of the flight to ensure they are free of disease and in good health. No quarantine stage is needed.
The following breeds of dog are recognised as dangerous dogs and cannot be imported into Switzerland:
All hybrids and mixes of these breeds that have at least 10% of their bloodlines.
Swiss authorities are unwilling to accept dogs with docked ears or docked tails to be imported into Switzerland, unless there is a very specific medical reason and if that is the case you need to send pictures and a medical history to the Swiss authorities www.blv.admin.ch
Also, you can only import up to 5 dogs or cats to Switzerland and they have to be pets rather than importing a number of pets for commercial reasons – i.e. if you are rescuing them or planning to sell them. Even if your dogs and cats are pets, then there is still VAT to pay in Switzerland on landing and this is amongst the most expensive in the world and can be hundreds of pounds.
