Taking Pets to Spain

Taking Pets to Spain – Safe, Vet-Led Pet Flights from the UK

Moving to Spain with your dog or cat is one of the most exciting — and nerve-wracking — journeys a pet owner can face. At PetAir UK, our vet-led team has been guiding families through international pet travel for over 20 years, safely flying more than 33,000 pets to their new homes worldwide. We handle every step of the Spain pet travel process: documentation, veterinary health checks, APHA endorsement, airline coordination, and arrival logistics — so you can focus on the adventure ahead, not the paperwork.

Entry Requirements

Pet Travel to Spain: Entry Requirements at a Glance

Flying your pet from the UK to Spain requires several specific health and documentation steps. Spain is an EU member state and applies the EU’s harmonised pet travel regulations, meaning requirements are standardised and strictly enforced at border entry points. The good news: if your documentation is correct and your pet’s vaccination history is in order, no quarantine is required on arrival.

Detailed Entry Requirements

Detailed Requirement Breakdown

Microchip

Required
Your pet must carry an ISO 11784/11785-compliant 15-digit chip implanted before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination is administered.
This is the foundation of all pet travel documentation — every subsequent record, from vaccination to health certificate, must match the microchip number exactly. A single digit discrepancy can result in refusal of entry at the Spanish border. Spanish law (Ley de Protección de los Animales) also requires all pets to be registered on a Spanish municipal database after arrival. Our vet team verifies your pet's chip number at the outset and cross-references it against every document we prepare on your behalf.

Rabies vaccination

Required
A legally required injection administered by an authorised vet after microchipping, with a mandatory 21-day waiting period before your pet is permitted to travel to Spain for the first time.
Every dog, cat, and ferret entering Spain must have a current rabies vaccination on record. For pets receiving their first rabies vaccination, you cannot travel until at least 21 days have passed after the jab — this is non-negotiable under EU law. Booster vaccines must be given in accordance with the manufacturer's schedule and must not have lapsed at the time of travel. Our in-house vets will review your pet's vaccination history at the very first consultation and flag any timing issues before they become a problem.

Blood titre test (RNATT)

Not Required
The UK is a EU-listed country; titre tests are only required from unlisted nations.

Tapeworm treatment

Not Required
(outbound to Spain) — Only required for return to the UK, administered 1–5 days before UK re-entry.

Animal Health Certificate

Required
The official travel document for pets travelling from Great Britain to the EU, replacing the old pet passport post-Brexit, issued by an Official Veterinarian and endorsed by APHA within 10 days of departure.
Since the UK left the EU Pet Passport scheme in January 2021, every pet travelling from Great Britain to Spain requires an AHC rather than a pet passport. This is a detailed multi-page document certifying microchip compliance, vaccination history, and the pet's health status. It must be issued by an Official Veterinarian (a vet with a specific RCVS qualification) and — crucially — endorsed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), part of DEFRA. For direct flights to Spain, the AHC must be bilingual in English and Spanish. The certificate is valid for entry into the EU within 10 days of issuance and remains valid for ongoing travel within the EU for up to four months. However, it is single-use for UK departures: a new certificate is required every time your pet travels from Great Britain to the EU. PetAir UK's vet team manages the entire AHC process, including booking your Official Veterinarian appointment and coordinating APHA endorsement.

Quarantine on arrival

Not Required
No quarantine period is required for pets entering Spain from the UK, provided all health and documentation requirements are fully met before departure.
Because the UK is classified as a "listed" country under EU pet travel regulations, pets arriving with correct documentation are not subject to quarantine. However, quarantine can be imposed at the border if a vaccine has lapsed, if the AHC was issued outside the 10-day window, if the microchip number does not match documentation, or if any other requirement has not been met. This is exactly why preparation quality matters — and why PetAir UK's vet-led process has a flawless compliance record on this route.

Breed Considerations

None
Restricted
Spain designates certain breeds as Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP), requiring specific licensing after arrival, while airlines impose restrictions on brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds during air transport.
Spain's PPP list includes breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, Dobermanns, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and several others. These breeds can enter Spain, but owners must register them with the local municipality and obtain a specific licence after arrival. Separately, most airlines restrict brachycephalic breeds — including Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats — in cargo holds during summer months due to heat and breathing risks. PetAir UK's team will assess your pet's breed at the outset and plan the safest possible routing and timing.

PetAir UK manages every one of these requirements on your behalf – from booking your pet’s health certificate appointment to liaising directly with airlines and border authorities.

Airlines & Route Options

Flying Your Pet to Spain: Airlines and Route Options

The UK–Spain route has specific pet transport considerations shaped by post-Brexit regulations and individual airline policies. Understanding your options upfront helps avoid costly mistakes — and PetAir UK’s airline coordination team handles all bookings on your behalf.

How Most Pets Fly to Spain: Manifest Cargo

The vast majority of pets travelling from the UK to Spain do so as manifest cargo — meaning they fly on the aircraft but as a separate consignment to passenger luggage, with their own airway bill, dedicated handling, and veterinary documentation. This is the standard model for pet relocation and is fully compliant with IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR). Pets travel in the temperature-controlled, pressurised hold of the aircraft — not in an uncontrolled luggage bay — and are handled by trained cargo staff at both ends. PetAir UK uses custom-built, IATA-approved travel cabins designed for your pet's comfort and safety.

IAG Cargo — British Airways and Iberia

IAG Cargo is the cargo handling arm of the International Airlines Group, which operates British Airways and Iberia. It is the primary cargo channel for pets travelling between the UK and Spain. IAG Cargo has transported live animals since the 1950s and strictly adheres to IATA Live Animals Regulations. British Airways partners with PetAir UK as an approved pet export service, meaning PetAir UK can access and coordinate bookings on BA's network directly. Pets travel on direct Heathrow–Madrid, Heathrow–Barcelona, and Heathrow–Málaga services among others.

Iberia — In-Cabin Option for Small Pets

Iberia, Spain's national carrier, may permit small pets (combined weight under 8 kg including carrier, with specific carrier dimensions) to travel in the cabin on outbound flights from the UK to Spain. Note that Iberia does not permit pets in the hold as checked baggage on UK routes — only in-cabin (for eligible small pets) or as cargo. In-cabin travel is subject to availability and must be booked in advance through Iberia's reservations team. Brachycephalic breeds are not permitted in the hold and may only travel in-cabin if they meet Iberia's criteria. PetAir UK will advise on whether in-cabin travel is suitable and achievable for your specific pet.

Airlines That Do Not Accept Pets

A number of popular UK airlines — including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, and Wizz Air — do not accept pets on their flights (other than recognised assistance dogs). This is an important consideration for owners who might assume budget carriers offer a simple solution. For pet relocation on the UK–Spain route, professional cargo handling through a specialist such as PetAir UK is the safest and most reliable approach, and often the only practical one for dogs above small size.

Routing and Flight Duration

Direct flights from London Heathrow to major Spanish airports — Madrid (approximately 2 hours 15 minutes), Barcelona (approximately 2 hours), Málaga (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes), and Alicante (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes) — are the preferred option, minimising travel time and stress for your pet. PetAir UK avoids routing pets through connecting hubs wherever possible on this route, given the short flight times and direct service availability. Where connections are unavoidable, we select animal-friendly transit facilities and coordinate seamless handovers between carriers.

Summer Heat Embargoes

Most airlines impose seasonal embargoes on brachycephalic breeds in cargo holds between May and September due to extreme heat risk. Planning travel outside peak summer months is advisable for affected breeds. PetAir UK monitors airline embargo calendars and will proactively recommend the optimal travel window for your pet's breed and destination.

PetAir UK manages every one of these requirements on your behalf – from booking your pet’s health certificate appointment to liaising directly with airlines and border authorities.
