Yes. The United States is a “Part 2 listed country” under DEFRA regulations. This means:
- Pets must enter under the commercial and non commercial import import process.
- Travel must be booked as manifested cargo, not in cabin or as excess baggage.
- A UK-based customs agent is required to clear pets on arrival—PetAir UK provides this service.
Entry Requirements for Pets from the USA:
1. Microchip
- Must meet ISO standards.
- Must be implanted before the rabies vaccination.
2. Rabies Vaccination
- Administered after microchipping.
- Valid for travel 21 days after the initial jab ( Subject to manufacture guidelines ). .
3. Health Certificate
- An Export Health Certificate must be issued by a USDA-accredited vet within 10 days of travel.
- Must be officially endorsed by the USDA.
4. Approved UK Entry Airport
- Pets must enter through a Border Control Post (BCP)—typically London Heathrow.
5. Arrival Inspection & Customs
- On arrival, your pet is checked at the Animal Reception Centre (ARC).
- If documents are incomplete or incorrect, pets may be quarantined or refused entry.
Note: Rabies blood testing is not required for dogs or cats travelling from the US to the UK.
