Christmas Foods Dangerous for Pets

It’s that time of year again, when tempting foodie treats seem to be everywhere. This can be great for humans, but there are lots of foods that can be extremely harmful to pets and here at PetAir UK, we believe this can often get forgotten amongst all the festivities. Many people may also just not know what human food is harmful.

Will Bisset, a pet food researcher and nutritionist at Pets Corner, said “Whilst it might be tempting to feed pets with human treats, many of them contain poisonous and life threatening chemicals that can either seriously harm or kill animals.”

So, this is just a quick reminder of the most common danger foods that you should never feed your pet, in the hope that it will make at least one or two people more aware!

• Chocolate
• Coffee
• Alcohol
• Onion or onion powder (commonly found in savoury snacks like pizza or crisps)
• Garlic
• Nuts
• Avocados
• Apple seeds
• Cooked bones (they can splinter and cause choking)
• Raisins/Sultanas (often found in mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake)
• Grapes
• Xylitol (commonly used as a sweetener in things like chewing gum and sweets)
• Yeast from bread and baked goods
• Lettuce or carrots for rabbits

With any other human food, you should always check thoroughly if it’s safe for your pet to eat and if you do see someone about to feed their pet one of the foods above, please tell them of the serious dangers.
