Get a QuoteA year ago, yesterday, the new microchipping law was introduced, making it a requirement that dogs are fitted with a microchip. Since then, almost 710,000 dogs have been microchipped, which is fantastic. Now, vets are hoping that the anniversary of the law coming into place will encourage owners of the 5.5% remainder of the dog population without microchips, to get one.
Dr. Huw Stacey, Director of Clinical Services at Vets4Pets said “It’s encouraging to see that so many dogs have been microchipped since the introduction of the law in April 2016,”
“But 450,000 still aren’t microchipped, meaning their owners are facing a fine of up to £500 and potentially losing their pet forever if they ever become lost. We’re hoping the anniversary will encourage dog owners to get their dog microchipped if they haven’t done so already.”
However, this isn’t the entire issue. It’s also important to make sure your dog’s details are up-to-date on the database. Alex Jackson, Head of Campaigns at Dogs Trust said “It’s essential that in addition to getting their dogs microchipped, the details on the database are up-to-date, to ensure they have the best possible chance of being reunited with their pet should they become lost,”
“It’s also a legal requirement for dogs to wear a collar and tag displaying the owner’s name and address when out in public. Our #doggyreunion campaign aims to educate owners about the importance of these simple acts, which can make all the difference when it comes to being reunited with your dog, should they become lost.”
