Pet care tips for Autumn

With the temperatures dropping outside, it’s time to have a think about your pet care routine for autumn and the upcoming winter. There may be some subtle changes required to your routine to make sure your dog is happy as Larry all season long.

1.    Diet

While it is a common assumption that your cat or dog will require more food during winter, it is very much dependent on any seasonal changes to their lifestyle. If your pet does remain quite active during the colder months then it is likely that they will need more food to keep them going. However, if they tend to spend more time inside and go on less walks, then they may actually need less food if they are getting a lower level of exercise than in the warmer months. It is a good idea to monitor your pets weight over autumn/winter to see if their intake needs adjusting.

2.    Grooming

Your pet’s fur performs many functions, including keeping them warm and protecting them from moisture. The constant fluctuation in temperature from the cooler outdoor air paired with warm central heating can cause havoc with your pet’s coat. Additional grooming will likely be required to prevent itchiness, dry skin and a dull coat.

3.    Arthritis/Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common ailments in dogs and according to pet insurers, Animal Friends, cases of it are on the rise. Usually considered as a disease that affects older animals, osteoarthritis can actually affect a pet of any age and cold weather only aggravates the condition. Make sure your dog is eating foods that are rich in Omega-3 fats in their diet. Talk to your vet about suitable medication and supplements.

4.    Keep them warm

If your pet is prone to getting chilly, particularly if they are a short-haired breed, make sure they have lots of nice, warm places where they can snuggle up. You could place a hot-water bottle underneath their bed or purchase a microwaveable pet warmer. If you’ve got an outside dog, make sure they have access to an insulated shed, garage or doghouse.
