Pet Travel to South Africa – What You Need to Know
South Africa has specific import rules for dogs and cats. The details can vary by pet, route, and timing, but these are the core requirements most UK travellers need to prepare for:
1) Import permit (required)
Dogs entering South Africa must have 2 permits issued by the Director of Animal Health and it must accompany your pet, and be neutered. Your permit application should be submitted at least 6-12 weeks before travel.
2) Microchipping and identification
Dogs must be identified by a microchip, and the microchip details must be recorded on export documentation.
(We strongly recommend microchipping before any vaccinations, so everything matches perfectly.)
3) Rabies vaccination (strongly recommended, often expected by carriers and authorities)
Rabies is a controlled disease in South Africa, and UK export guidance notes state it is advisable for dogs to be vaccinated before export. Where given, timing typically needs to fall not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months before export for a primary vaccination.
We’ll advise the safest timing for your pet and ensure your paperwork aligns.
4) Health certification and DEFRA/APHA export process
Pet export paperwork must be completed and signed by an Official Veterinarian as part of the UK export health certification process (APHA/DEFRA).
PetAir handles the document flow, checklists, and deadlines so nothing is missed.
5) Additional health testing for dogs (case-dependent)
South Africa may require dogs to complete specific disease testing (these requirements can appear within the export health certificate process and/or import permit conditions). UK guidance notes reference testing requirements and the need to submit samples in good time so results are back well before export.
We’ll confirm exactly what applies to your dog and book the timeline around lab turnaround times.
6) Quarantine rules
For compliant UK imports, dogs and cats are typically not quarantined, but non-compliance can trigger quarantine on arrival.
Our job is to keep you firmly in the “no surprises” category.
Typical timeline (practical planning guide):
- 6–12+ weeks before travel: plan route, start permit process, confirm vaccine/testing windows
- Final weeks: vet check, export paperwork finalisation, flight confirmation
- Flight day: handover, check-in, comfort plan, and tracking
