Travelling to the USA with your pet is exciting. But long-haul flights, airport environments and new routines can feel overwhelming for animals. One of the best ways to help them feel safe is by preparing them for their travel crate well before take-off.

Crate training builds confidence. It reduces stress. And it helps your pet cope with movement, confinement and unfamiliar surroundings during their journey.

At PetAir, we have safely relocated more than 33,000 pets to over 300 destinations worldwide. Select packages also include 24/7 online vet access, which covers behaviour consultations. This means you can get professional support for crate training and pre-flight preparation at any time.

Why Crate Training Matters for USA Pet Travel

Crate training creates a familiar, secure space that travels with your pet. This is especially important when flying to the USA, where flights are long and airport handling can involve noise, movement and short waiting periods.

A well-trained pet settles faster, handles the journey better and arrives in a calmer, more relaxed state.

Start Early

Begin crate training as early as possible. Short, frequent sessions are ideal.

  • Place the crate in a quiet, familiar room. Add a soft bed, your pet’s favourite blanket or a toy. Leave the door open. Let your pet walk in and out freely.
  • Reward any interest in the crate. Praise helps. Small treats help even more.
  • When your pet chooses to rest in the crate on their own, you know you are on the right track.

Build Positive Associations

Use mealtimes to build confidence. Start by placing the food bowl near the crate. Then gradually move it inside. Eating in the crate helps your pet link the space with comfort, routine and security.

Once your pet is comfortable, gently close the door for a few seconds. Open it again before any signs of stress appear. Slowly increase this time across several sessions.

Stay calm during training. Your pet will follow your lead. Gentle reassurance goes a long way.

Choose the Right Crate

For USA travel, your pet must use an IATA-approved travel crate. These crates meet airline safety and welfare regulations.

A suitable crate should allow your pet to:

  • Stand upright without touching the top
  • Turn around comfortably
  • Lie down in a natural position
  • It must also have secure ventilation on all sides.

At PetAir, we supply the crates and offer bespoke crate fitting as part of our relocation service. You can read more about crate size guidance and how to measure your pet for this here.

Choosing the correct crate is essential. A poor-fitting crate can increase stress, reduce comfort and may not be approved by the airline.

Simulate Airport Handling and Travel Conditions

If possible, practice some of the movements your pet will experience on travel day.

  • Lift the crate gently a few centimetres from the floor. Move it from room to room. Place it in a different part of the house for short periods.
  • Once your pet is happy to relax inside the crate, start introducing short car rides. Keep the journeys brief at first. Allow your pet to settle. Then gradually build up the duration. This helps your pet get used to vibration, movement and engine noise. These are similar to the sensations they will feel during take-off and landing. Car journeys also replicate the process of being transported to and from the aircraft.

These simple exercises prepare your pet for the handling that takes place during airport checks.

Reward Every Step

Praise and rewards are essential. Your pet should feel proud of their progress.

Celebrate:

  • Calm crate time
  • Longer training sessions
  • Successful car journeys
  • Confident behaviour

Small treats, soft words or gentle affection work well. Consistency is key. Every pet learns at their own pace.
