What you need to know

Pet Travel to Brazil – What You Need to Know

Brazil’s pet import rules are clear, but they’re also specific. The key is getting the right certificate, completed correctly, within the correct timeframe.

1) Quarantine rules in Brazil

For most dogs and cats, Brazil does not require routine quarantine on arrival if entry requirements are met. However, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture notes that for pets imported due to an owner’s change of address, the animal may remain with the owner under veterinary supervision for at least 90 days, with health certificates provided at 30-day intervals. We’ll guide you on what applies to your route and circumstances.

2) Microchipping and identification

Brazil states a microchip is not required for entry. That said, we often still recommend microchipping as best practice for permanent ID, and some airlines and transit points may expect robust identification. Microchipping your cat and dog is required for in the UK.

3) Rabies vaccination

Brazil requires rabies vaccination for pets over 90 days old. If it’s your pet’s first rabies vaccination, travel can only occur 21 days after the jab.

4) Parasite treatment

Brazil requires a broad-spectrum treatment against internal and external parasites within 15 days prior to the certificate issue date, including active ingredients.

5) Clinical examination

Your pet must be examined within 10 days prior to the certificate issue date, confirming they are fit to travel with no clinical signs of infectious or parasitic disease.

6) The correct health certificate (and who can sign it)

Brazil requires an International Veterinary Certificate that is issued or endorsed by an Official Veterinarian / Veterinary Authority. Certificates signed only by a private vet are not accepted. From the UK side, you must apply for the relevant Export Health Certificate (EHC) for Brazil (certificate 2906) via the official system (England, Scotland, Wales), or through DAERA in Northern Ireland.

7) Validity and timing

Brazil states the certificate is valid for 60 days from issuance, however it must be presented at a Brazil port of Entry within 10 days of completion, provided rabies vaccination remains valid. In real life, flight schedules, airline processes, and appointment availability mean it’s wise to plan early – and that’s where our team keeps everything on track.

PetAir UK manages the paperwork, veterinary checks, airline coordination, and day-of-travel logistics so nothing is left to chance.
