Pet Travel to the USA – What You Need to Know
The USA is one of the most popular destinations for UK-based dogs and cats. The good news is that, for pets travelling directly from the UK and other dog rabies free or low risk countries, the process is clear and manageable when planned properly.
Dogs travelling from the UK to the USA
From 1 August 2024, the USA introduced updated rules for importing dogs. For dogs that have only been in rabies free or low risk countries such as the UK for the past six months, the key federal requirement is completion of the online CDC Dog Import Form before travel. This generates a receipt that must be presented on arrival and is normally valid for multiple trips for up to six months, provided your dog has not visited a high risk country in that time.
In addition, your dog must:
- be at least 6 months old at the time of travel
- have an ISO-compliant microchip for permanent identification
- be clinically healthy and pass a fit-to-fly veterinary examination shortly before departure, as required by the airline
While the CDC’s simplified rules mean that, for low risk routes, a separate federal rabies certificate is no longer always required for entry, many individual US states still expect or require proof of a current rabies vaccination. For that reason we strongly recommend that all dogs are vaccinated against rabies in line with US state guidance and airline expectations before travel.
State-level rules also vary. For example, current guidance confirms that from 1 August 2024 a DEFRA Export Health Certificate (EHC 8860) is no longer required for most dogs travelling to the USA, but it remains required for Massachusetts and is recommended for Hawaii. Our team checks the latest federal and state rules for your exact destination and route as part of every booking.
Cats travelling from the UK to the USA
At federal level, the CDC does not routinely require proof of rabies vaccination for cats, but all cats must appear healthy on arrival or they can be referred for examination at the owner’s expense. In practice, most US states – and many airlines – expect cats to have a valid rabies vaccination, often given at least 30 days before arrival.
For cats, we therefore recommend:
- ISO-compliant microchipping
- up-to-date rabies vaccination that meets the destination state’s timing rules
- a pre-travel health check and airline fit-to-fly certificate
Quarantine rules for pets entering the USA
For healthy pets travelling directly from the UK and meeting the relevant federal and state requirements, there is no routine quarantine on arrival in the mainland USA. However, the state of Hawaii and the territory of Guam operate their own, much stricter quarantine and testing programmes for both dogs and cats, even from within the USA.
If your final destination is Hawaii, Guam or a state with particularly strict rabies controls, we will explain the additional steps and timelines needed so there are no surprises.
Timelines and preparation
Because of the age limits, documentation, state rules and airline availability, we usually suggest starting the process at least 3–6 months before your planned move, especially if you have multiple pets or complex routing.
For straightforward, low risk cases with adult pets, it is sometimes possible to move your pet more quickly with Fast Track, but early planning gives you more airline options and a smoother journey.
Airline and routing options
From the UK, we can route pets to major US gateways such as New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and many others. We work with a wide range of reputable airlines that offer pressurised, temperature-controlled pet travel areas. Where possible, we aim for the shortest, kindest route with minimal stops and comfortable transit times.
Throughout, our veterinary team and dedicated travel coordinators handle the export paperwork, liaise with airlines and ground handlers, and guide you through state-specific requirements.

4. Custom pet travel cabin design
Using your pet’s measurements and behaviour profile, we design a bespoke IATA-approved pet travel cabin. Every cabin is built to give your pet enough room to stand, turn and lie comfortably, with secure doors, deep veterinary bedding and species-appropriate calming pheromones.
We will also guide you on how to help your pet see their cabin as a safe, familiar den before flight day.
5. Flight day and live journey updates
On the day of travel, our team carries out final checks to ensure your pet is calm, comfortable and ready to go. We manage check-in and airline handling, minimising waiting times where possible.
During the journey, our Pet Travel Care Tags system helps keep you updated, so you always know where your pet is and how their journey is progressing.
6. Arrival support and onward travel
When your pet lands in the USA, they will be unloaded, processed by customs and handed over in line with local procedures. We can arrange onward travel where needed and provide clear guidance on settling your pet into their new home, including parasite control, climate considerations and local veterinary care.
At every step, our focus is on safety, welfare and communication – giving you confidence that your pet’s USA adventure is in expert hands.
FAQs
-
For pets travelling directly from the UK and meeting the relevant CDC, USDA and state requirements, there is normally no quarantine on arrival in the mainland USA. Pets are inspected visually and, if they appear healthy and their documents are in order, they are released to you.
Hawaii and Guam have their own rules and may require strict quarantine, additional blood tests and longer lead times. Our team will explain this clearly if your destination is one of these locations. For personalised guidance, you can get a quote and we will talk you through the specifics.
-
On most flights departing from the UK, pets travel in a dedicated, pressurised and temperature-controlled area of the aircraft, in their own secure pet travel cabin. Only recognised assistance dogs are usually allowed to travel in the passenger cabin on standard commercial flights.
For owners who want to stay side-by-side with their pet throughout the journey, we can also offer our Superior private jet option on selected routes, where humans and pets share the cabin in a calm, uncrowded environment. Whatever you choose, we will recommend the safest, kindest option for your individual pet.
-
The exact paperwork depends on your route and destination state, but for most low risk, UK-based pets you can expect:
- CDC Dog Import Form for dogs that have only been in low risk countries in the past six months
- Proof of microchipping and rabies vaccination, strongly advised for both dogs and cats and compulsory in many states
- An airline fit-to-fly health certificate issued by a vet shortly before travel
- Any state-specific forms or health certificates, such as EHC 8860 where applicable
PetAir UK prepares and organises all of this paperwork for you. To understand exactly what your pet will need, the best starting point is to request a tailored quote.
-
We recommend contacting us 3 to 6 months before you plan to travel. This allows time to complete any required rabies vaccinations within the correct timeframes, confirm airline space and finalise routing, train your pet to relax in their travel cabin, and address any medical or behavioural concerns well before flight day.
For complex itineraries, large dogs, snub-nosed breeds or destinations with stricter rules, starting even earlier is sensible.
-
Costs vary depending on your pet’s size and weight, the route and airline, the level of service you choose, and any additional veterinary work or permits required. As a rough guide, long-haul pet flights typically run into the low to mid thousands of pounds, with larger dogs and more complex itineraries costing more.
Our quotes are fully itemised and transparent, with the option to use our Flexible Pet Travel Payment Plans to spread the cost. The quickest way to get an accurate figure is to request a tailored quote.
-
When planned properly, with the right pet travel cabin, route and pre-travel preparation, the vast majority of pets cope extremely well with long-haul flights. Airlines we work with provide temperature-controlled, pressurised holds, and pets usually settle down to sleep for much of the journey.
Our vets will assess your individual pet, advise on any health considerations and design a comfortable, secure cabin just for them. We never sedate pets for flights, as this can be unsafe at altitude – instead, we focus on calm training, familiar bedding and pheromone support.
-
If your dog has spent time in a country classed as high risk for dog rabies in the six months before entering the USA, additional rules apply. Depending on your situation, this may include rabies vaccination and titre testing, an import permit and potentially more complex routing.
In these cases it is especially important to get expert advice early. Let us know your pet’s full travel history when you request a quote and we will design a compliant, safe plan.
