Taking Pets to Charlotte
Taking Pets to Charlotte
Relocating your beloved pet from the UK to Charlotte, the “Queen City,” is an exciting but intricate process requiring careful planning and research. This thriving metropolis welcomes newcomers with distinctive Southern hospitality, but crossing international borders can pose challenges. From documentation prerequisites to a comfortable flight for your dog or cat, each detail matters. By partnering with PetAir UK, you gain specialists who verify every regulation set by UK and US authorities, clarifying potential quarantine requirements and arranging safe transport. Charlotte’s warm climate and abundant green spaces create an inviting environment for furry friends, yet international travel demands confirming all legal and logistical elements before departure. In the following sections, we will guide you through key steps for a successful relocation, from vet visits and crate selection to airline policies and anticipating your pet’s needs upon arrival. Charlotte’s robust economy, anchored by banking and motorsports, still requires pet owners to respect local rules and airline limitations. Expert guidance significantly reduces stress and fosters a smoother relocation. With well-coordinated arrangements, you and your pet can settle into Charlotte’s vibrant environment more quickly and happily. By planning meticulously, you can look forward to a smooth transition and a warm welcome in Charlotte.
1. Research Entry Requirements and Restrictions
Before booking any flights or finalising plans, research the requirements for bringing your pet into the United States:
- Federal regulations are governed by the CDC and USDA, covering import conditions and health standards.
- North Carolina may enforce additional state-level rules, so check these when planning a move to Charlotte.
- Consult official sources or work with pet travel experts like PetAir UK to stay updated on evolving laws.
- A valid health certificate is typically required, showing vaccination status and general wellness.
- Rabies vaccination is usually mandatory, with some states requiring a waiting period for efficacy.
- Young pets may have specific age or vaccination-related requirements.
Starting early helps you navigate any complications well in advance.
2. Consult Your Vet
Your vet plays a central role in preparing your pet for the journey:
- Confirm that all vaccinations are up to date and obtain advice on any additional boosters or treatments.
- Ask about microchipping—widely required for international identification.
- A thorough health check will confirm your pet is fit for air travel and free of underlying conditions.
- Request a health certificate within the timeframe specified by your airline—usually no more than 10 days before departure.
Attending to these details early will help prevent issues closer to travel day.
3. Secure the Right Travel Crate
Choosing the correct travel crate ensures safety and comfort:
- Ensure your crate complies with IATA guidelines for ventilation, materials, and security.
- Your pet should be able to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably inside.
- Acclimatise your pet to the crate in advance by using treats, toys, or blankets with familiar scents.
- PetAir UK can advise on crate sizing, modifications, and accessories to enhance comfort.
A properly fitted crate improves your pet’s travel experience and ensures acceptance at check-in.
4. Understand Airline Policies
Different airlines may have unique pet policies, so be sure to:
- Check whether your pet can fly in the cabin or must travel in the cargo hold.
- Understand limitations on pet numbers, breed restrictions (especially brachycephalic breeds), and weather embargoes.
- Look for carriers that offer climate-controlled cargo—especially helpful for Charlotte’s hot summers.
- Research how airlines manage pet layovers, boarding, and delays.
- Book early, as flights often have a limited number of pet slots.
Be ready to present all required documentation at check-in for a smooth start to the journey.
5. Sort Out the Paperwork
Having your paperwork in order is essential:
- Carry your pet’s health certificate, vaccination history, and proof of microchipping.
- While rabies vaccination is not a blanket requirement, it’s strongly advised—and mandatory when flying American Airlines or entering states like Texas and Florida.
- Carry multiple copies in case you’re asked to present them during customs or layovers.
- Check for recent CDC updates and ensure your documents align with current requirements.
- PetAir UK can assist in compiling and verifying all necessary paperwork.
6. Plan Your Travel Timetable
Plan your travel schedule around weather and airline rules:
- Charlotte has humid summers—some airlines restrict cargo travel during heatwaves.
- Winters are mild but can occasionally bring cold snaps, which may affect flight schedules.
- Try to book direct flights to reduce stress and layover risks.
- Allow extra time for airport check-ins, document reviews, and customs clearance.
- Prepare for longer pickup times after landing—especially when collecting pets from designated cargo areas.
7. Consider Using a Specialist Pet Shipper
Pet relocation experts like PetAir UK simplify complex procedures:
- They handle documentation, airline bookings, and customs coordination.
- They can recommend flight paths known to be safer and more pet-friendly.
- Services may include crate provision, veterinary checks, and customs brokerage.
- Ideal for owners with little international travel experience or pets with medical needs.
- Ask for a detailed quote outlining all included services and costs.
8. Prepare for Arrival in Charlotte
Once you land in Charlotte, follow these steps:
- Have all documents ready for customs—officers will verify your pet’s health and vaccination status.
- Pick up your pet from the designated cargo or baggage area as directed.
- Plan onward travel carefully, especially in warmer months—bring water and a comfortable carrier.
- Locate and schedule a local vet appointment soon after arrival to establish care.
- Familiarise yourself with pet-friendly hotels, parks, or short-term rentals if you’re not moving into a permanent home immediately.
9. Alleviating Pet Stress and Anxiety
Moving can be overwhelming for pets, so:
- Introduce the crate early to build positive associations.
- Maintain feeding and walking routines as much as possible during the transition.
- Ask your vet about pheromone sprays or calming supplements if your pet is prone to anxiety.
- Line the crate with absorbent pads and a familiar item (like a worn t-shirt) for comfort during travel.
- Give your pet time to adjust after arrival—avoid exposing them to too many new things at once.
10. Settling into Life in Charlotte
Charlotte has plenty to offer pets and their owners:
- Make sure your rental property allows pets and understand any rules around pet ownership.
- Explore pet-friendly amenities—Charlotte has many dog parks, trails, and pet-welcoming cafes.
- During summer, avoid long outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and provide ample water.
- Keep up with flea, tick, and mosquito prevention—especially important in humid climates.
- Regular vet visits and local registration help keep your pet safe, legal, and well-adjusted in their new home.
With careful planning, your pet will settle into Charlotte life smoothly and happily.

US to the UK
From start to finish the service provided by PetAir UK was excellent. They are on top of everything – they communicate well – they let you know the process and keep you informed. We went for the Gold service and our dog took three days to get to us in the US from the UK. We knew he was in safe hands – you can tell that they genuinely care as my parents who had the job of handing our dog to the driver in the UK were upset to see him go. The driver was lovely and reassuring – the team in the office even had photos of him sent to them when he arrived at the UK kennels to reassure them he was okay. On the US side the agent took care of everything and he was safely delivered to us chilled out and care free three days later. Thank you PetAir UK. We will be using your services again when we return in maybe 2/3 years time.

Monty to Los Angeles
“Monty is safely ensconced in Los Angeles after an extremely long journey. Our old cat has not welcomed him with open paws but that will probably change and the rabbit doesn’t know what this alien creature is except he chases her around the house. I am attaching a couple of photos so you know what he looks like – looks rather sweet and innocent to me – don’t believe a word of it!
So thank you for getting him here safely.”

Blue & Belle in Florida
Amazing from start to finish !
Travelled with my 2 Doberman : Blue 11 month & Belle 2 years . The kennel pick up prior to our long haul flight (London – Miami) was perfect , the custom build crates were perfect , and the Miami kennel that picked the dogs up from customs was great as we met there to let the dogs have a run around /loo break after their long flight . Both dogs seemed completely unaffected by the long flight and all the people that they encountered during the journey. I was naturally anxious about it all : I didn’t need to be as everything went absolutely perfect !

Sassy, Rahna and Dexter went to Orlando, USA – July 2015
I just wanted to thank you both for what you and your colleagues for the amazing service you have provided us with.
All 3 of our pets have arrived in Florida fit and well. As this move has had my wife and I on an emotional roller coaster but having our pets arrived today has so much.
Though you dealing with the mountain of silly little questions that put our minds at ease, we were worried how long it would take our pets to settle but as you can see Sassy and Rahna have settled so well, Dexter has as well just not as easy to get a picture of him.
Thank you again
All are friends have been made aware of what a fantastic company you are for transporting our pets.

A huge thank you to everyone at PetAir
“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone at PetAir for how accommodating and helpful you have all been. We were very apprehensive about putting the cats on a plane, but everything went so smoothly that is took away a lot of the stress. We also really appreciated you looking into the various routes for getting here, especially when we almost changed the final destination to Detroit rather than Chicago a week before the flight!
Pip and Elsie have settled in very well in Michigan, and they were back to their usual selves within no time at all. I’ve attached a couple of photos of the mischievous pair!
Thanks again for everything.”

Molly flew over to Houston, USA
I wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU! to you and your staff for doing such a wonderful job transporting Molly here to me in Houston.
She arrived safe and sound last Friday, as scheduled, and your staff did a fantastic job with her crate and comfort amenities. Understandably, she was VERY happy to see me and to get out of the crate and move about, but it appeared she had a relatively comfortable flight over.
Molly is adjusting to life here in Houston, and she is back to her typical Jack Russell ways!

Peter the cat has flown to Boston, USA
“Hi Bob and Cat and Peter
Thank you so much for everything! Peter arrived safely (if a bit smelly!) to a very cold Boston last night. After an hour and half car journey to his temporary home in NH, he met is ‘grandparents’ and is settling in quickly. Yesterday was already an emotional day for us – but knowing that he was being so well looked after certainly made the journey easier for us. The whole process was so well organized – from initial quote to picking him up, and thank you to Peter (who picked him up, appropriately) for being so calm and thorough to two blubbering owners! We hope we won’t have to travel internationally again, but if we do – we will be in touch!!!
Thank you!!

Atticus the cat flew to Portland, Oregon
Dear Valerie, Jackie, Victoria and the Petair UK team,
I wanted to say a massive thank you for all your help with bringing Atticus over to Portland, Oregon, and for answering all of my many questions. I was extremely anxious and worried about Atticus flying all the way over here, but felt reassured with all your replies. Atticus arrived safely Tuesday evening, he was a little bit concerned with the loud noises in the cargo area but soon settled down on the car ride home with us talking to him. We have been getting lots of head rubs, chirrups and purrs since he arrived!! 🙂 The past couple of days he has been enjoying his new American food and looking out of the windows at all the wildlife. I have enclosed a couple of photos of him 🙂
If we ever relocate back to the UK we will definitely be contacting Petair UK. You have all been fantastic! Thank you so much! Jxxxxx 🙂

England to Washington DC
Like most, I find the idea of pets on a plane a bit weird. PetAir made it so easy. I just filled in some simple forms when asked, and my dog and cat were delivered door-to-door from the North of England to Washington DC. They also have good packages to either bring down the cost, or go for a comprehensive service. I found it reassuring that PetAir is run by vets. Strongly recommend!
