UK’s first food hall for dogs opens in Bournemouth

UK’s first food hall for dogs opens in Bournemouth | PetAir UK

Based in the old Debenhams department store building on the high street in Bournemouth is the newly renovated Bobby & Co. Acquired by ethical property firm, Verve Properties, their main aim is to revive old buildings and bring communities together. The company has a strong focus on sustainability and supporting local, independent brands and businesses. And they’ve just opened the UK’s first food hall for dogs!

They’ve also revived a historical local brand in itself. Bobby & Co is the name of the original department store that opened in 1915 until being rebranded when Debenhams took over in 1972. The building renovation is far from finished, with grand future plans for a food hall, spa and roof terrace. However, some areas of the store opened in summer 2021. They included a sushi restaurant, ice cream parlour and of course, the world’s first food hall for dogs.

The dog food hall, aptly named DROOL, attracted many local dog owners to try out the wares. There are many dog specialities available for your pup to try here. Specialist dog bakeries have designed all of the treats on offer. They include things like liver cakes and puppercinos. And if you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion with your dog, there’s even dog wine and beer available from Cambridgeshire’s Woof and Brew. It’s all completely alcohol-free and non-carbonated. Moreover, wine does not contains any grapes, which are toxic to dogs.

This is so much more than just a pet shop. There are lots of fun features for your four-legged friend to enjoy in the store. DROOL features a cake stand, dog doughnuts, a tuck shop and a ‘lick and mix’ station. Dogs can also choose their favourite treats for themselves using the dedicated sniffing holes. The dog-height stands means your pooch can really stick their nose in. For a truly British seaside experience, stock up on the fish’n’chip flavoured treats and take a walk through the gardens to the local beach.

Pets to EU – Post Brexit

Pets to EU - post Brexit | PetAir UK

If pets are travelling to EU and are travelling within 5 days of their owners, you need a declaration by the owner to able the vets to sign the correct certificate. This is all about how to fill it out correctly. Please read the notes at the bottom of the page.

Do not print this picture out as it is only for pets to travel to Spain. Different EU countries have their own version. You need to use one with your destinations language on. We will provide this on the list of booking forms.

EU owners declaration

Please read below for tips on how to fill out this form correctly.

NOTE 1 – Please insert the name of the owner or person accompanying the pets. If you put the owners name then it needs to be the same name as is on the vaccination cards.

Notes 2 – Chip number of your pet – if you have any doubts about this then leave it and we can fill it in

Notes 3 – Leave this blank as the vets (either our vets or yours depending on who does the final examination) will add the number of the health certificate

Note 4 – Delete 2 of these options. The owner is the owner as stated on the vaccination cards and other documents. If the owner is flying within 5 days of the pet then leave this option and delete the other two. If you as the owner are giving authority to a friend or relative to accompany your pets then delete the top option and the bottom option and leave this one. The third one is more aimed at road transport operators, so for Petair journeys please strike through this option.

Note 5 – insert the place and date when you signed this form.

Note 6 – Sign here – the same person who was marked in NOTE 1 needs to sign here.

Adventure park for dogs opens in Cheshire

Adventure park for dogs opens in Cheshire | PetAir UK

An adventure park for dogs has opened near Nantwich in Cheshire. Unleashed Wrenbury officially opened on 25th May and has a dog-friendly lake and assault course to put your pup through its paces. The park is run by Jess Fleet, a dog-owner herself, who used land owned by her family to create the safe and secure park after becoming frustrated at the lack of places available to take her spaniel to play off-leash. She told Cheshire Live:

We’ve had the land in our family for a while and it’s an idea I’ve always had.”

The adventure park covers 3 acres of land in a peaceful rural location that is completely enclosed by a secure fence and away from any major roads. There’s free parking available onsite, toilet facilities and an undercover seating area as well as hot drink facilities for humans and drinking water on tap for dogs. The park also features a compostable poo disposal and dog wash area to keep hygiene levels as high as possible. The park itself features a dog-friendly lake and an assault course with jumps, balance beams and tunnels for your dog to play with.

In order to keep the experience as pleasant as possible for everyone involved, the park also has strict rules for attending. You’re not allowed to take more than 3 dogs per person, they must have up to date vaccinations, be showing no signs of ill health and must be wearing an ID tag and collar. They also request that dogs with behaviour issues do not attend group sessions and that female dogs that are in season do not attend. Owner Jess Fleet told Cheshire Live:

During the sessions owners stay with their dogs, as it’s not day care – owners will be responsible. If there is a particular dog causing a problem we will ask the owner of that dog to leave.”

Unleashed Wrenbury also run specialised dog socialising sessions with separate times for small dogs and medium-large dogs. The park is also available for private hire for events, parties, training or if your dog has behaviour issues or does not socialise well with others.

Do Pets Go Into Quarantine When Leaving the UK?

Do pugs go into quarantine when leaving the UK? | PetAir UK

There’s no quarantine on landing for most of the places we fly dogs and cats to; the only places that impose quarantine restrictions out of the common destinations are Australia and New Zealand. Otherwise, dogs and cats land at the destination airport and can be collected and brought home that same day.

For pet travel to Australia and New Zealand, all cats and dogs must complete a minimum of 10 days in an Australian or New Zealand quarantine facility. Any issues that occur which increase the biosecurity risk posed by an animal may result in a longer stay in quarantine. Your pet would need to stay in quarantine longer, for example, if a tick is found on them. It would be required to stay for 21-30+ days until blood testing is completed at your cost. Or, if your pet arrives without correct paperwork, they would have to stay in quarantine until the paperwork is sorted which can be expensive and very stressful for the owner.

If you are travelling to Australia or New Zealand, it is advisable to start preparing your pet early to avoid an extended quarantine visit or delay in the UK. If you are going abroad in the next 7-18 months and you plan on taking your pet with you, start the rabies work. If it’s less than 7 months, start the rabies work very urgently. This is because your pet needs to have a rabies vaccination at least 7 months before they travel to Australia/New Zealand. About 3-4 weeks after this vaccination, they will need a rabies blood sample or Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titer Test (RNATT), which will determine whether your dog/cat has made enough antibodies to keep them safe from contracting rabies. Your pet would not be allowed to enter Australia until at least 180 days after the rabies blood sample. The reason behind this is if your pet actually has rabies and produced antibodies because of this, then it would’ve shown itself by this time. You will also need to get an import permit after the Titer test, but no sooner than 42 days of import.

After your pet flies and lands in quarantine, the quarantine team will collect them from the airport and settle them in. You will be emailed to say they are safe and well. In Australia, there is no visiting, but in New Zealand, quarantine is slightly more relaxed. For other destinations such as Singapore or Japan, your pet will land and go to the airport based quarantine area. Their paperwork will be checked there, and if all is satisfactory then they will get released. For most other destinations, the landing procedure is slightly less complicated and they are just collected at the cargo area of the airport.

There is a lot to know and plan when flying your pets abroad, and lot to potentially get wrong or misinterpret. So, if you still have some unanswered questions or would like anything explained further, you can either look at the FAQ’s on our website and the pages for the specific locations we fly pets to, or feel free to give us a call on 01725 551124. We’re happy to help with anything you need.
