Indianapolis is just about one of the pet-friendliest places you could ever hope to visit. Metazoa Brewing Company

This brewery takes the meaning of dog-friendly to the next level. They went and built their own dog park. As well as an obstacle course and a paddling pool, the ground is covered in artificial grass. This means no more dirty paws when the weather takes a turn. Drink a craft beer from the bar on the deck and play a game of cornhole with your buddies while your pooch runs round with theirs. And if the dog park wasn’t enough to persuade you, they even donate 5% of profits to local animal charities. Food is provided by resident food truck, Old Gold Barbecue on Thursday-Sundays.

Marott Park and Nature Preserve Loop

Taking around 45 minutes in total, this pleasant, easy route is great for getting a bit of nature with your dog. The 3.9km loop is a quiet spot leading through woodlands and close to a river if your dog needs to cool off. Dogs are permitted off-leash in some areas. During the spring you’ll find plenty of beautiful wildflowers and it’s a great spot for birdwatching too.

City Dogs Grocery

First opened in January 2017 by self-proclaimed pet lover Christi Rider, City Dogs Grocery now has three locations in Indianapolis. The focuses on offering top notch nutritional supplies for your dog as well as a range of toys and accessories. They’re also part of the Chip In app program, helping them donate to worthy, local animal charities as you shop.

Indiana World War Memorial

If you’re looking for a history fix, the Indiana World War Memorial allows well-behaved, leashed dogs within the grounds of the memorial. However, dogs are not permitted to join you inside. But, if you come with someone else you can take turns touring the museum.

The second largest city in Arizona, Tucson lies deep in the Sonoran desert, and the stunning scenery that surrounds the city isn’t about to let you forget that. Serving up freshly baked donuts, cookies and other treats, this is a great spot to treat your four-legged friend. Christa can whip up a custom birthday cake for your pooch and they even have dog-friendly beer so they can really celebrate in style.

Catalina Canyon Loop Trail

This 3.7km loop takes you alongside staggering mountain views before dropping down to a creek bed that requires crossing several times. It’ll take you around an hour to walk this well-marked desert trail, spotting various cacti and plants as you go. The entrance fee is $7 per vehicle, or $3 on foot or bicycle. Dogs can be off-leash in certain areas of this trail but watch out for wildlife. Scorpions and snakes can be found here – it is the desert after all!

Miko’s Corner Playground Dog Park

Located right next to the zoo, this fully enclosed off-leash dog park lets your pup run free. The two-acre site is divided into separate areas for larger and smaller dogs. There are water fountains available to keep your pooch hydrated. There is also a sheltered seating area for humans to rest. Open from 7am-10pm daily.

Borderlands Brewing Company

Located in a 100-year old warehouse in the historic arts district, this brewery offers a slice of time gone by alongside a nice, cold beer. Dogs are welcome to join you inside and outside on the patio. In fact, this place is so dog-friendly that they even have Waggin’ Wednesdays. This is where they’ll give you half off your first beer if you bring your dog! Alongside the freshly brewed beer, they also serve tacos and hot dogs.

Forest Park Wildwood Trail

Although your dog must be kept on a leash at Forest Park, there are over 70 miles of well looked after trails to discover. The Wildwood Trail weaves for over 30 miles through the park and is America’s longest urban trail. You’ll need to make sure you’re hiking the trail south to north as sections of it make up part of some one-way loop trails. With plenty of access points, it’s easy to split the trail up into shorter routes if the whole lot is too much for you to manage in one go.

Lucky Labrador Beer Hall

With four location across the city, you’re never far from a dog-friendly brewery in Portland. But Health Department rules mean that dogs are not allowed inside. However, they are welcome on the outdoor patios. The food menu varies slightly at each location but they all offer a range of pizza and salads. Water is provided for thirsty pups. 

Portland International Rose Test Garden

Located in Washington Park, the Portland International Rose Test Garden is home to over 10,000 roses. With free entry and a picnic spot that boasts an incredible view of Mt Hood, this is a great place for owners to take their dogs for a nice relaxing walk. It’s recommended that you visit in June for peak-bloom but the garden is open all year round.

This vegan restaurant has a menu that will tame even the hardiest carnivore. From burgers to meatball subs to vegan Mac & cheese, you definitely won’t miss the meat. There’s also an impressive cocktail menu that offers alcoholic ice-cool slushies in the warmer months. There are no dog showers, drinking water or doggie bags onsite but there are bathroom facilities and showers for humans and plenty of parking.

Located in Wynwood, this artisan ice cream shop sells hand crafted ice pops. With nearly 50 flavours to choose from, these natural, healthy popsicles are the perfect way too cool off. They even sell Doggy Pops made with fresh fruit and sweetened with honey so you can treat them too!

Amelia Earhart Bark Park

This five-acre dog park is located in Hialeah is open seven days a week from 8am to sunset. The park has separate areas for small and large dogs and is completely fenced off. There are plenty of benches and shaded areas as well as water fountains to keep both humans and pooches well hydrated. The park is also equipped with dog poo bags and waste bins. Parking is free during the week but there is a charge at weekend.

LoKal

This laid-back burger bar in Coconut Grove offers a range of burgers, sandwiches and bites made with sustainable, local ingredients. Dogs are welcome to join you in the outdoor patio area. They even have their own section on the menu which features meatloaf, chicken and even a doggy craft beer! 

Lincoln Road Mall

This palm-tree lined pedestrianised shopping mall in Miami Beach is home to some of the biggest names in retail and dining. It’s also home to a farmer’s market and antiques market as well as outdoor cinema nights. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times but many of the restaurants have outdoor dining areas that will welcome your pooch. While you’re there, check out the pet boutique Dog Bar, selling everything from collars and leashes to dental care and grooming supplies.

The largest city in Washington State is often voted one of the most dog-friendly in America. With a metropolitan area surrounded by mountains, forests and water, this is a nature-lover’s dream. This park contains 8.6 acres of off-leash fun for your dog. Fully fenced and with access to the waters of Lake Washington, this park is a great stop to let your dog run wild. There’s also a separate area for smaller, or more shy dogs. The park is full of winding gravel trails which are wheelchair accessible too.

Norm’s Eatery & Alehouse

Located in Fremont, this neighbourhood pub is about as dog-friendly as they come. Their logo is even features several dogs! In fact, the whole place is decorated with dogs. They even have a full dog menu featuring a Bacon Pupcake, Turkey Nuggets and Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Pretzels. 

Washington Park Arboretum

This dog-friendly park is free to enter and has 230 acres of stunning plants and paved hiking trails. Dogs need to be kept on a leash at all times and aren’t allowed inside the Japanese Garden. 

Rattlesnake Ledge Hiking Trail

This 8.5km trail is one of the most popular in the area. Located near North Bend, the views across the lake and mountains are not to be missed! The gravel trail is well looked after and there’s plenty of shade along the way. Despite being rated as moderate, most dogs should be able to manage it as the steep bits are fairly short-lived. Dogs do need to be kept on a leash though.

Bark Espresso

This community coffee house serves locally roasted coffee and homemade bakery and lunch items. Dogs are allowed to join you indoors, although there is a separate area aptly named the ‘Hound Hang’. They’ve got dog treats and pooch lattes and they’ll even make you a coffee with your dog’s face on!

When you think of Los Angeles, your mind is probably filled with images of blue skies, palm trees and glossy celebrities eating in trendy cafes and shopping in high-end boutiques. Runyon Canyon

There’s a reason this is LA’s most popular hiking spot! Just a short distance from Hollywood, Runyon Canyon spans 160 acres, packed with trails and breathtaking views of the city. There’s also a 90-acre “off leash” dog park. There are numerous trails of varying length and elevation but these will require your dog to be on a leash. The trails have water fountains at regular intervals. They even have dog-height bowls so your pup can rehydrate in the hot California sun.

Muddy Paw Cafe

On Sunset Blvd, in the Silver Lake neighbourhood, sits Muddy Paws Cafe, a coffee shop with a conscience. For every cup of fair trade, organic coffee sold, Muddy Paws donates to a local animal charity. With a selection of delicious dog treats available and a quiet, shady outdoor space, this dog-friendly cafe is the antithesis to LA’s over-priced trendy coffee shops.

Angel City Brewery

Located in an old industrial unit in the Arts District of Downtown LA, Angel City is one of Los Angeles’ oldest breweries. Offering a wide selection of beers, games, rotating food trucks outside and brewery tours, Angel City has something for everyone. They are also more than dog-friendly, welcoming well-behaved, leashed dogs into their large indoor space and outdoor patio. They also have a range of dog toys for sale and hold a ‘dog wash’ fundraiser once a month.

Malibu Country Mart

If you want to hit the shops, then Malibu Country Mart is a great location to take your dog in Los Angeles.
